In 2011, after moving to Berlin, Ester Bergsmark is struck by a transphobic shout. The body freezes—a survival tactic shared with jellyfish, possums and other animals, and years later the moment becomes the starting point for a journey through fear, dissociation and the desire to return to life.

A Sweetness from Nowhere refuses a straight path through trauma. It moves between documentary essay, poetic facts and evocative fable. In a worn-out castle, figures pass through staged encounters, fantasy and bodily memory; nightclubs become temporary ecosystems, human time meets geological time, and darkness begins to nourish new forms of connection.

Bergsmark creates a tactile, sensory film that asks us to reconsider dissociation not only as damage, but also as a way of surviving and perceiving. Playful, visually explosive and constantly changing form, it searches for unexpected flashes of sweetness—joy, lust and intimacy—appearing where they are least expected.
