In his trademark humorous style, with abrupt cutting and ear-grabbing sound design, Erik Gandini smoothly interweaves a broad spectrum of ideas on the future of work. An American businessman emphasises the importance of work ethic in employees when saying: «Send me someone who will turn up on time, work with enthusiasm and pass a drug urine test – anyone – and I shall employ as many as you can send.» However, globally only a small percentage of people feel genuinely engaged in their jobs. AFTER WORK studies the absurdity and the duality of freedom, of obligations, of the concept of work as not only a source for surviving, but also a social and stimulating necessity for most. The complex shift from being human to human beings suggests we reevaluate our perception of time spent deepening our humanity. Do we have to redefine our relationship with work as the pillar of our lives?
