Wigs played a crucial role in driving the Asian economy forward in the post-war period. In the 1960s, wigs were the fourth-largest export in Hong Kong's export-oriented industrialization. Positioned between Mao's China, the main source of hair supply, and the insatiable Western market, Hong Kong acted as the vital connector. That is, until the U.S. Treasury Department imposed an embargo on "Asiatic hair," attempting to target Communist China and its hair industry. This categorization later transformed into "communist hair," further redirecting exports towards allies like South Korea and Japan. AN ASIAN GHOST STORY explores this era and the interplay between U.S. imperialism and the East Asian order during the Cold War, through a beautiful and original film by a filmmaker with a distinct and meticulous cinematic approach.
