As Bunescu puts it: “I cannot edit without working on sound, and I cannot work on sound without being aware of the editing.”

In this masterclass, Bunescu takes us inside that process: how rhythm is built, how sound can alter the meaning and emotional weight of an image, and how dialogue, silence, ambience and off-screen space shape the experience of a scene. The conversation will also explore the creative relationship between editor, sound designer and director, and the role of the editor as an active co-author of the film.

Across her remarkable career, Bunescu has collaborated with some of the most important filmmakers in contemporary European cinema, including Cristian Mungiu, Radu Jude, Călin Peter Netzer and Andrei Ujică. Her credits include 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, The Death of Mr. Lazarescu, Child’s Pose, Collective, Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn and Ana, mon amour, for which she received the Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Contribution at the Berlinale.

This masterclass offers a rare opportunity to look closely at how one of Europe’s leading editors and sound designers thinks through cinema — and how image and sound can be shaped together from the very beginning of a film.
