Sound of Air follows a collaborative process between photographer and video artist Per Maning and trumpeter and composer Nils Petter Molvær. They begin from different sensory positions: one rooted in the still, black-and-white image, the other in sound and improvisation.
Through experimental and spontaneous situations, they enter each other’s practices. Images invite sounds; music shifts how a landscape, a body or a silence is seen. Neither medium simply illustrates the other. In the tension between the visible and the audible, a new expression gradually emerges.
The film accompanies Molvær’s album Be Quiet, featuring collaborations with Imogen Heap, John Paul Jones, Alva Noto, Soheil Shayesteh and Anders T. Andersen. Yet Maning does not seek to document a finished result. Instead, he opens a space where the creative process itself can be seen and experienced—a sensual film about creation, presence and the art of listening and seeing.
